About 2,500 high school seniors who applied for early decision to Fordham University were told they had gotten into the competitive Jesuit college – only to learn their acceptance letters were sent out by mistake.

Red-faced Fordham officials told The New York Times, which broke the story, that a third-party contractor was to blame, and apologized for the goof.

“The University deeply regrets that some applicants were misled,” the school said in a statement.

“They deferred my application from early action to regular decision so I have to wait til April 1,” griped an applicant named Marisa on Twitter, one of many applicants who took to social media to complain.
