Around 150 firefighters gathered at Battalion 19, where purple and black bunting was hung on the building to mourn the loss of Michael Fahy, a rising star in the department.

They shared a moment of silence and saluted the fallen firefighter, then listened to “Amazing Grace” played on the bagpipes.

“I just wanted to say, Mike was one of those guys who was just … we knew right from the beginning when he just got promoted to chief, he was one of those special guys that was recruited into the 19th Battalion,” Battalion 19 Commander Brian Fink said. “We saw his potential, and we wanted him with us.”

Fahy was responding to a report of a gas leak at a two-story home on West 234th Street when the residence suddenly exploded. He was fatally struck by a piece of the building’s roof, officials said.

Firefighters and police discovered a marijuana grow house on the second floor of the home.

“I know everybody here feels terrible that his three children will have to grow up without him,” Mike Woods, a chief of Battalion 19, said after the ceremony. “We are going to do our best to make sure his memory lives on forever.”
