The family of a man who spent 23 years in prison before his murder conviction was overturned agreed Friday to a $8.25 million settlement from the city.

The daughter of William Lopez, whose conviction in the 1989 slaying of a drug dealer was tossed out by a judge in 2013, will split the settlement with Lopez’s wife, according to the daughter’s attorney, Michael Aviles.

Less than two years after being released from prison, Lopez suffered an asthma attack and died. His family previously won a $4.2 million settlement from the state.
