The Siren bird women of Greek mythology, who lured sailors with their sweet music to shipwreck on their rocky coast, would be proud to know that more than two thousands later they’re still rockin’ — in good ol’ Brooklyn, U.S.A.
Coney Island’s Siren Music Festival tooted the horns of the winged seductresses by presenting dynamic new musical talent on two outdoor stages on Surf Avenue, at West 10th Street, one for headliners, the other for secondary acts, but both providing an oceanfront platform for edgy sound masters, who pumped music all day long and well into dusk and bathed the area with the sounds of today and tomorrow.
The electrifying showcase has become a launching pad for emerging bands and artists and this year, it’s tenth sponsored by Village Voice, was no exception despite jitters by organizers of recent shows over the fluctuating fate of the flailing amusement Mecca.
None of that disrupted the harmony for the glut of noise-impresarios, among them, Screaming Females, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Ponytail and Cymbals Eat Guitars, who shared the spotlight with Matt and Kim, Holy F—, Harlem and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, or, the sea of music fans who descended upon the seaside town to get their fix, first-hand.
