One New York fan has figured out how to turn fantasy football into moneyball.
The defending National Fantasy Football Championship winner is Bronx native Tom Carbone, a printing-press operator who more than doubled his yearly $65,000 salary with his six-figure prize.
“You have to have a little bit of luck,” he said. “It’s almost like working two jobs in a year.”
Carbone is back in the game this year. He is one of 322 players from around the US who paid a $1,400 entry fee to join the competition and participate in yesterday’s draft.
Carbone treats his hobby like a career. He spends seven preseason months relentlessly scouting talent. Then, when the season begins, he toils at his computer two hours a day to keep up with the numbers of every player in the NFL. On Sunday, it’s 12 hours in front of the TV, watching games.
In yesterday’s draft, held locally at the midtown Sheraton, he picked seventh and was able to grab Arizona Cardinal receiver Larry Fitzgerald.
The No. 1 pick was Philadelphia Eagle quarterback Michael Vick, whom Carbone scoffed at as “overrated.”
