ALBANY — President Obama has signed a disaster declaration to help support state and local recovery efforts on Staten Island and other areas struck by severe storms and flooding last month.

The declaration makes federal funding available to state and local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities.

The storms took place between March 13 and 15 and wreaked havoc on Staten Island and in Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk and Westchester counties.

Federal money is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard-mitigation measures statewide.
