Feds rescue Liberty diver
US Park Police officers rescued a swimmer after he jumped into New York Harbor yesterday on what he said was a mission from God.
The unidentified 29-year-old man dived from a footpath in Jersey City’s Liberty State Park in front of stunned parkgoers at about 4:30 p.m. yesterday.
Incredibly, no one bothered to call for help as the man tried to swim three-quarters of a mile to Liberty Island.
It wasn’t until 45 minutes later that a witness spotted him and called 911.
He told cops that given his orders from God, he’d rather drown than get on their boat. But they finally convinced him to come aboard.
