Federal prosecutors are pushing for convicted terror mom Aafia Siddiqui to get slapped with a life sentence, according to legal papers filed in Manhattan yesterday.
Siddiqui was convicted of trying to murder American military personnel in Afghanistan in 2006. She grabbed a gun during questioning at a base and began shooting.
Siddiqui was wounded by return fire and brought to New York to stand trial.
The Brandeis- and MIT-educated neuroscientist, who faces a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a lifetime maximum term, has been portrayed as mentally unstable by her lawyers. They have asked for a 12-year sentence.
But prosecutors highlighted the severity of her actions in their push for a lifetime bid.
“Siddiqui’s crime was horrific in its intent,” the papers state. “If she accomplished what she intended, several United States personnel would be dead.”
