ALBANY— The often-contentious state Senate battled yesterday over the wording of an “awareness week” for women.

The Democratic minority had wanted to call the week “Reproductive Rights and Justice Week” and proclaim support for abortion rights and sex education.

But Republicans, who enjoy a 32-30 majority, heavily edited that title into “Women’s Health Week.”

Republicans said the proposed proclamation was opinion, not fact, and thus violated Senate rules. They also excluded a statement in it that said women are “solely responsible” for childbearing.
