Finally, some good news this week from City Hall: fire fatalities are at an all-time low.

Fire Commissioner Sal Cassano went on Mayor Bloomberg’s weekly radio show to announce that 60 people had died in fires this year, 13 less than the previous low of 73 last year.

“And that’s going back to 1919, when we had 77,” Cassano pointed out.

Bloomberg attributed the FDNY’s showing to “good management,” “good equipment” and “a bunch of dedicated people.”

Neither Cassano nor the mayor mentioned the city’s proposal to close 20 engine companies during night shifts due to budget constraints.

The closings, intended to save $15 million a year, have been put forward before only to be shelved following budget negotiations with the City Council.

The fire-death numbers gave Bloomberg an opportunity to trumpet the achievement of the FDNY, changing the topic from the flawed snowstorm clean-up that has raised questions about the performance of the Sanitation Department.
