Firebox-cut alarm
A City Council member yesterday was skeptical of Mayor Bloomberg’s proposal to reportedly save more than $6 million by deactivating fire-alarm boxes throughout the city.
“I don’t think that it makes sense,” Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley (D-Queens), who chairs the Fire and Criminal Justice Committee, said at a City Hall hearing.
The mayor claims getting rid of the 15,000 street boxes — which needs council permission — would save more than $6 million.
Crowley said the plan to get rid of the 15,000 street boxes also does not address a federal judge’s discrimination concerns.
The judge in 1997 ruled that removing the boxes would discriminate against deaf people who cannot use phones.
