A fire official says snow and high winds delayed efforts by about 200 firefighters to bring a fierce blaze at a six-story apartment building in Queens under control.

The Fire Department of New York spokesman says crews had difficulty setting up equipment and getting to the building because of cars abandoned in the snow.

The 5-alarm blaze also was burning fiercely, fed by high winds.

The spokesman says that by the time firefighters got to the building in the Jackson Heights section, the flames had spread into the void between the ceiling and the roof that is often filled with lumber.

Four firefighters and two civilian suffered injuries in Monday’s blaze. None of the injuries were life-threatening.

The FDNY says blaze was under control about 9:24 p.m.
