Three firefighters rescued a man who had jumped into the East River from the Williamsburg Bridge Tuesday night, officials said.
Firefighters James Mare, Ken Mealey and David Bell, of the FDNY’s Marine Battalion, were on a boat in the river when a radio call came in of a person in the water.
They spotted the man clinging to a wall near Houston Street on the Manhattan side at 8:15 p.m.
Waves were crashing over his head and he was struggling to stay above water, Bell said.
The firefighters threw the man a life ring, but he did not take hold of it.
That’s when Mealey jumped in the water and pulled the man to safety.
The man, whose name was withheld, was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was listed in serious but stable condition.
