A child has died from the flu – marking the first flu-related pediatric death this season in the city, officials said Thursday.
The city’s Health Department did not release the child’s age, gender or home borough.
Acting Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot encouraged “all New Yorkers” to get immunized against the flu – especially kids 6 months of age and older, pregnant women and the elderly.
There were about 80,000 deaths and 900,000 hospitalizations connected with the flu across the country last year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.
Of that total, 183 were kids – including five in the city.
