A group of New Jersey first responders wound up splashing around in a frigid lake after they tried to save a deer from an ice patch and their water vehicle flipped, according to reports.

The doe had been stuck in the partially-frozen Mills Pond lake for over 12 hours when firefighters and personnel from the Office of Emergency Management in the Morris County town of Roxbury made their way onto the ice around 7 a.m.

The rescuers soon became stuck themselves, prompting the OEM to bring in their amphibious vehicle, according to a Roxbury Police Department spokeswoman.

But the supposedly water-proof machine soon capsized, sending the deer’s saviors into the freezing water.

Everyone — deer included — was then rescued by the Roxbury Fire Company Ice Rescue Team.

The doe is now recuperating at the Antler Ridge Wildlife Sanctuary, in Warren County, NJ.
