The third floor of Criminal Court in Kew Gardens, Queens, transformed this week into a cautionary tale for men accused of misbehaving.

Just down the hall from Hiram Monserrate’s trial for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend by slicing her face with a drinking glass is the trial of Brigitte Harris, charged with cutting off her father’s penis and strangling him as revenge for years of sexual abuse, and to protect her niece from the same fate.

Anyone who’s seen the video of Hiram dragging his bloodied girlfriend, Karla Giraldo, through the hallway of his apartment building has to wonder what the hell she’s doing with him. I have one bit of advice:

Forget the trial. Pay attention to the case down the hall. This could be your future.
