Free city tours in danger
Tourists could be in for a rude awakening.
Big Apple Greeter, a nonprofit that provides volunteer tour guides, will go bust if it cannot raise $300,000 by September, according to Crain’s New York Business.
Founded in 1992 to make the city more welcoming, the charity has always been somewhat strapped for cash. But now that corporate donations have largely dried up, it’s the tour guides who are asking for direction.
A fund-raising campaign was launched to save the program, and though the service has always been free, guides recently started asking visitors for donations.
The organization says its army of 300 volunteers has welcomed 88,000 visitors from 124 nations.
