‘Free’-quent flier beep
Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz accepted free trips to Turkey and the Netherlands last year, according to disclosure forms made public yesterday.
A spokesman said the Nov. 13-17 trip to Turkey, which cost the Federation of Turkish Associations between $5,000 and $40,000, was undertaken by Markowitz to “strengthen cultural and business ties” with the home country of a large number of his constituents.
“Brooklyn is the ‘Turkish capital of America,’ ” said the spokesman.
Markowitz went to the Netherlands on March 18-21 at the invitation of its consul general to represent New York City at its quadricentennial celebration. In 2008, Markowitz took time from his busy schedule to visit Israel on the arm.
