Twenty-two people were injured after a freight elevator malfunctioned and crashed into a basement in Chelsea, fire officials said.
The accident occurred at a building on Sixth Avenue near West 19 Street when the elevator suddenly plunged three floors shortly before 7 a.m.
Nine people with minor injuries were taken to Beth Israel Hospital and Bellevue Hospital, fire officials said.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
