Mayor Bloomberg and French President Nicolas Sarkozy paid a visit to the Statue of Liberty Thursday, an early celebration in honor of Lady Liberty’s 125th anniversary.
Bloomberg called the statue, donated by France in 1886, one the most “enduring” gifts in the long friendship between the two countries.
“She is a symbol of freedom forged in the fires of the French and American revolutions and an inspiration for countless revolutions ever since,” Bloomberg said.
“It is not simply a statue,” Sarkozy said, speaking in French, according to an interpreter. “It’s a notion, an idea, an emblem.”
The Statue of Liberty will officially celebrate her 125th anniversary on Oct. 28.
