The head of the state Board of Regents wants to end the practice of having spiffy new charter schools decked out with bright shining furniture sharing buildings with weather-beaten traditional public schools.

Chancellor Merryl Tisch said it’s unfair to have such a rich man-poor man divide in the same building.

She proposed that any time a new charter school co-locates in a building with an existing traditional school, both schools be provided new furniture and amenities to lessen jealousy and conflict.

During a Regents subcommittee meeting on Monday, Tisch called the dichotomy “abhorrent.”

“The new charter schools look like the Taj Mahal and the other schools look run down,” Tisch said.
