Flames leaped from the roof of a Howard Beach home yesterday after a massive gas explosion blew out the walls and left a woman seriously burned.
“I saw flames and came running,” said a witness, Anthony Mignone. “The whole house was burning. The woman who lives there was out on the street, just wandering.”
The woman, Theresa Pepitone, lived at the Sandy-damaged 84th Street house with her husband, Joe, a retired cop who was not home at the time, authorities said. She was hospitalized for serious burns.
“She looked like she was wearing latex gloves, but it was her skin,” Mignone said. “Her hair was burnt to her head like melted plastic glued to her head, and her pants were all burnt.”
Officials are investigating the gas leak.
