John Zaccaro Jr. was elected mayor of Saltaire, LI, on Fire Island.

Zaccaro, 52, whose late mother, Geraldine Ferraro, was in 1984 the first female vice-presidential candidate of a major US political party, defeated the incumbent candidate by 21 votes.

The beach town has faced controversy over costly repairs to a grocery store damaged in Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
