Get red-y for celery
Look who’s stalking!
A produce breeder who spent 20 years turning the color of celery from its natural green to a blazing red had his moment in the sun yesterday when his crunchy creation made its debut.
Larry Pierce started developing red celery in 1991, working off a European heritage variety using natural breeding methods, according to Dan Duda, president of Duda Farm Fresh Foods.
Although the color’s different, red celery tastes the same as green. It will be test-marketed on the West Coast beginning Dec. 1 before it arrives here.
