TRENTON, N.J. — New York is seeking the $3 billion that the federal government had committed to the Hudson River rail tunnel that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie scrapped.

The Record newspaper reports that U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York has asked Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to redirect the money to the Long Island Rail Road’s East Side Access Project and the construction of the Second Avenue subway line.

Transportation officials in New Jersey are examining how to redirect as much as $1 billion in federal highway funding that had been pledged for the tunnel.

LaHood has said New Jersey will be required to repay up to $350 million.

Christie cited cost overruns when he killed the project last month.
