A dollar van driver tried to run from the scene after plowing into a bicyclist in Brooklyn on Saturday — only to be chased down and held for cops by angry, but good, Samaritans, police said.
The woman cyclist was turning from Avenue U onto busy Flatbush Avenue in Marine Park at around 5:15 p.m., when she was hit. The impact sent her flying, a law-enforcement source told The Post, and left her bike mangled under the van’s rear wheels.
The 42-year-old driver ditched the van, but witnesses tackled him a block away and held him until cops arrived, police said.
The woman is in critical condition.
“People were crying,” said witness Veronica Hernandez, 22, of Brooklyn, who was headed to the mall.
“Her head was cracked open; there was blood,” she said. Two men fled the van, she said, adding, “Instead of helping, they left the poor girl to die.”
The van bears Pennsylvania plates, not city Taxi and Limousine Commission-authorized tags.
A phone message left with Bergen County Community Transportation, the company whose name is on the side of the van, was not returned.
The driver was taken to the 63rd Precinct station house, where charges were pending Sunday morning.
