Prosecutors are “scapegoating” three construction officials for a blaze that killed two city firefighters at a condemned Ground Zero skyscraper, a lawyer argued yesterday.

Mitchel Alvo, Jeffrey Melofchik and Salvatore DePaola who have pled not guilty to manslaughter and other charges, are being unfairly blamed for regulatory failures at the former Deutsche Bank building, claimed lawyer Edward Little.

Firefighters Robert Beddia and Joseph Graffagnino died of smoke inhalation in the August 2007 blaze.

Prosecutors say Mitchel Alvo, Jeffrey Melofchik and Salvatore DePaola knew a standpipe had been cut and did nothing about it. They have pleaded not guilty to manslaughter and other charges.
