The developer of a controversial community center and mosque near Ground Zero can continue getting by on a wing and a prayer — for now.
A Manhattan judge has temporarily short-circuited Con Ed’s bid to boot Sharif el-Gamal from the site due to the $1.7 million he owes in back rent, but said he’ll have to pay through the nose to stay.
In a ruling made public yesterday, Justice Richard Braun granted Gamal’s Park51 mosque an injunction barring landlord Con Ed from evicting him from the spot he hopes to transform, along with a building next door, into a 15-story community center.
The injunction comes with two major conditions. It upped the monthly rent from $12,500 to $25,000, and raised the amount of the bond Gamal must post while the case is ongoing from $100,000 to $881,000.
The ruling did not say when Gamal has to come up with the cash.
A lawyer for Gamal did not return a call for comment.
