Police say a suburban New York man who killed his family and himself bought his shotgun nearly six months earlier.

State police say Samuel Friedlander and the dealer used proper procedures in the sale.

Police say the 50-year-old Friedlander beat his wife to death last week in their Cross River home. He used the shotgun to kill his two children in their beds and to commit suicide.

The police report says Friedlander bought the gun and two boxes of ammunition on April 29 at a sporting supply shop in Yonkers.

His wife, Amy, and their children, 10-year-old Molly and 8-year-old Gregory, were buried Sunday in Pennsylvania.

At the time of the killings, the Friedlanders were in the midst of a divorce. Their rabbi said they were having financial difficulties.
