It’s a proxy war!

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) endorsed embattled Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY) for re-election as the fellow New York Democrat faces a tough primary challenge from the left.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani backs fellow lefty Brad Lander, the former city comptroller challenging Goldman — showing growing division between the far-left and mainstream Dems.

Goldman, a two-term congressman who officially kicked off his re-election campaign Tuesday in Chinatown, is vulnerable because of his support of Israel, while many primary-voting Dems have turned on the Jewish state over the war in Gaza.

“I have a very strong support for the state of Israel, and it’s right to exist as a Jewish state, the only Jewish state in the world,” he told reporters, when asked about his views backing a two-state solution to the conflict.

“But I have voiced my serious opposition to the Israeli government, and everybody should be able to do that as I have done.”

In a statement, Jeffries and other House Democratic leaders said Goldman is no slouch when it comes to standing up to President Trump, citing his role as House counsel during the first impeachment proceedings against Trump during his first term.

“Dan’s successful experience during the first impeachment of Donald Trump has proven invaluable in pushing back against the extremist agenda of House Republicans,” said the joint statement from Jeffries, Whip Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) and caucus chair Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.).

“His unique investigative ability will be critical to the work of the House Judiciary Committee in the next Congress,” the statement said of Goldman, a former federal prosecutor.

The liberal 10th Congressional District encompasses Lower Manhattan and portions of Brooklyn.

Jeffries did not back Democratic socialist Mamdani for mayor until the final weeks of the general election, and his endorsement was a tepid one.

“I am proud to support our former controller, Brad Lander in his run for Congress. I’m proud to support him because of his honesty, his sincerity and the vision that he has shared with New Yorkers at both at the city council district and a city wide level time,” Mamdani said during an unrelated press briefing Tuesday.

“In a moment when so many New Yorkers, especially working class New Yorkers, are asking themselves, who will stand up for them in a moment as difficult as this one? I know that the answer is Brad lander as the next congressman.”

Moments after Jeffries’ endorsement, the Goldman campaign announced the congressman also has the backing of Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul, who formerly served a term in Congress.

Hochul, like Goldman, is a strong backer of Israel.

“As the Trump administration drives up costs, rips away health care, and targets New York, the urgency of building a House majority that can stand up for New York families could not be more clear. New Yorkers need experienced fighters in Washington who know how to stand up to abuse of power,” Hochul said.

“Dan Goldman is exactly that kind of leader, taking on Donald Trump directly and fighting every day for our state, our democracy, and his district. I’m proud to endorse Dan for re-election and look forward to continuing our work together.”

The Lander campaign said the challenger is a better fit for the district, and even took a shot at Goldman’s wealth.

“Donald Trump is abducting our neighbors and attacking our democracy, all while it’s getting harder and harder for New Yorkers to make ends meet. NY-10 residents are fed up with elected officials who’ve been acting like this is all normal,” said Lander spokesperson Lauren Hitt.

“Heir to the Levis Strauss fortune, Dan Goldman literally chummed it up with Don [Trump] Jr. on vacation in the Bahamas, praising Trump’s Israel policy. Brad recognizes the urgency of this moment, and he’s ready to meet it. Brad has spent his entire life organizing his neighbors to win big fights – stopping evictions, building new housing, passing paid sick leave, and protecting immigrants from ICE.”

Goldman fired back at Lander’s comments saying: “I mean, if that’s what he’s running on. I hope he can find something a little more meaningful, but I think what is clear about my record over six years now is that, unlike him, I have stood up to Donald Trump and I’ve won.”
