WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — A lawyer for a man badly burned at his home in a Hasidic Jewish Village in New York plans to file a lawsuit against its religious leader.

Lawyer Michael Sussman tells the Journal News that Grand Rebbe David Twersky’s hold on the ultra-insular New Square village “has to end.” He plans to file the suit Monday.

Twersky rarely speaks publically. Previously, he’s said that use of force is “never permissible.”

Aron Rottenberg suffered third-degree burns over half his body in May when he was confronted by a man carrying a flammable liquid.

Relatives say Rottenberg was targeted because he stopped worshipping at New Square’s main synagogue. Sussman says Rottenberg prays with a new congregation outside the village. It’s located about 30 miles northwest of New York City.
