The New York Times was second to The Brooklyn Paper in reporting the federal announcement of the Gowanus Canal’s brand-new Superfund status this morning — and, worse, the Old Gray Lady’s Web site doesn’t seem to know which filthy Brooklyn canal it’s talking about!

As you can see from this screen shot, the Times’s story ran with a picture of a suitably dirty waterway — but we Brooklynites know that this photo was actually taken of the Newtown Creek, the fetid corpse of water that separates our borough from Queens, another portion of the city.

The building at the top of the photo in question is actually along Metropolitan Avenue, south of Grand Street. As such, it’s actually in Maspeth.

By 3 pm, the Times’s Web site had issued the requisite correction: “A photograph that appeared earlier with this article was published in error. It showed Newtown Creek, not the Gowanus Canal.”
