Virtual subway agents are coming to a station near you.
The MTA today announced that its adding 77 high-tech kiosks to 16 more subway stations which will relay everything from service advisories to nearby dining choices.
The additional kiosks — which operate like a big iPad loaded with transit and neighborhood info — in the yet-to-be-named spots come following a popular pilot program with the machines at five stations, including Bowling Green and Penn Station.
The new kiosks will be added to the stations this year.
To fund the expansion, the agency partnered with two advertising companies who will pay for the kiosks and the installation for a piece of the ad revenue.
Once they are installed, riders will be able to get escalator and elevator status updates, step-by-step travel instructions and real-time transit planning routes to the destination of their choice.
“Taken together, this is an unprecedented amount of information made available to subway and commuter rail customers. These state-of-the-art customer communications kiosks provide instant information that makes using the transit system more efficient,” said MTA Interim Executive Director Thomas Prendergast.
“The positive feedback we have received via our website or Twitter account has confirmed that our customers have embraced this new technology improving their riding experience.”
