ALBANY — Queens Democrat Hiram Monserrate has filed a petition to run in a special election to fill his former seat.

He said supporters collected more than 5,500 signatures to get him on the ballot March 16.

Monserrate, who attacked his girlfriend with a broken glass, was sentenced in December to probation for the misdemeanor.

Democratic Party officials are backing Assemblyman Jose Peralta in the Senate district.
