Comptroller Bill Thompson launched his most intense attack of the mayoral race yesterday, comparing Mayor Bloomberg to former President George W. Bush and charging that both were guilty of “hijacking democracy.”

Speaking at a campaign rally outside City Hall commemorating the one-year anniversary of the extension of term limits, Thompson declared, “Not since George Bush and the Republicans stole the election from Al Gore has there been such an egregious electoral abuse of power.”

Thompson tore into the mayor by adding, “He lied to us and he betrayed our trust.”

Bloomberg was considerably lower key in his response.

“He’s got a right to his opinions,” he said.
