A solar-powered street-trash compactor that can compact up to 50 pounds of trash is intriguing, even if it’s priced at $4,000, Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday.

Bloomberg called the device “pretty interesting.”

Sanitation officials note a steel mesh litter basket goes for $125. Bloomberg said the solar basket might make sense depending on “how many fewer times do you have to pick it up.”
