NEWARK, N.J. — One of the highest-ranking former politicians admitted his role Tuesday in New Jersey’s largest corruption sting.

Former Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano III pleaded guilty to one count of extortion conspiracy, admitting he accepted bribes from a government informant posing as a corrupt developer.

The 32-year-old was the youngest mayor in Hoboken’s history when he took office July 1.

He held the position less than three weeks before he was arrested July 23 with 43 other defendants. The federal sting targeted political corruption and money laundering.

Cammarano resigned July 31.

Nearly 20 people have pleaded guilty in the case. One person was convicted at trial.
