Advocates are pushing Gov. Hochul to include parents who lose their infants to stillbirth in New York’s paid family leave law.

Current law leaves New York moms whose babies die in stillbirth out of paid family leave, which forces them back to work just days after they’ve gone into labor, argues Cassidy Crough, 34, a Hudson Valley woman whose daughter Olivia died at 36 weeks when the umbilical cord became wrapped around her neck. Crough gave birth to Olivia after 16 hours of labor.

She’s part of nonprofit PUSH for Empowered Pregnancy, which is set to hold a news conference Tuesday calling on Hochul to change the law.

“It is essential that Governor Hochul assists in changing the current law that not only discriminates but endangers the lives of women already facing enormous tragedy, by forcing us to choose between paying our bills or following the medical advice of our doctors postpartum,” said Crough, who added, “The Governor can easily do so by adding stillbirth to Paid Family Leave in her 2023 budget.”
