A major home-mortgage firm has agreed to repay $3.5 million to black and Hispanic customers overcharged due to their race.

Under terms of the deal, GFI Mortgage Bankers will fully compensate 600 borrowers hit with higher rates and fees on housing loans between 2005 and 2009.

GFI will also pay a maximum $55,000 fine and adopt new anti-bias policies, said the Manhattan US Attorney’s Office.
