Talk about a free ride.
A homeless couple was snapped taking a snooze Saturday on a downtown bench with their own personal Citi Bike propped up next to them.
It’s easy to snag the pay-per-ride cycles for free, said the man, who identified himself as “Red Pea.”
“Fox 5 taught us to do it,” said the 35-year-old, referring to a report by the local station on Citi Bike thefts. “Sometimes people don’t lock them, so you can pull them out.”
But he didn’t need to use that illegal trick for this bike — Pea says he found it abandoned at the nearby Alfred E. Smith Houses the day before.
“In the projects, you see a bike [leaning] like this, everyone knows you can use it. You can ride it up to 40th Street, whatever. When I’m done, I leave it for someone else,” said Pea.
It can cost up to $34.95 a day for the rent-a-ride bikes and $150 for a yearly membership. Last summer, police found 67 stolen Citi Bikes dumped in East New York, Brownsville and Crown Heights, Brooklyn.
