Calling the monstrous woman “depraved,” a Manhattan judge today sentenced a homeless mother to 25 years to life in prison — the maximum allowed — for the 2004 beating and starvation death of her own three-month old baby boy.

Little Colesvintong Florestal had spent most of his short life in pain before dying in a Harlem family shelter.

The baby was pitiably gaunt, weighing just nine pounds — six ounces less than his birth weight.

“You are the face of the crime of depraved indifference murder,” Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Laura Ward told the mother, Jovannie.

“Your actions, or inactions, toward your son were depraved,” the judge said. “It’s incredible a mother could treat a child like that.”

Lead prosecutor Rachel Hochhauser had asked the judge for the maximum, noting that “Cruelty is simply more cruel when unleashed upon a helpless child.”

Jovannie, was convicted of depraved indifference murder two years after the murder, but that verdict was overturned and a retrial ordered after the Appellate Division ruled that the first trial judge had not used the most up-to-date version of the depraved indifference statute in instructing the jury.

The child’s father, also named Colesvintong, is serving a 20-year murder sentence after pleading guilty in 2006 to shaking and striking the baby.
