Homeless military veterans in the metropolitan area number nearly 10,000, Sens. Charles Schumer (NY) and Robert Menendez (NJ) reported yesterday.

Support programs for homeless vets face funding shortages, the Democratic lawmakers said.

Citing 2008 federal data, they said between one-fifth and one-fourth of the country’s homeless are veterans.
