The city is cracking down on homeowners who rent out their spare rooms to travelers.

A mayor’s task force is behind the inspections of dozens of private homes that double as bed-and-breakfasts and have cited many for illegally operating as hotels.

According to state law, it is legal to rent out up to two rooms as long as the owner lives in the home, but city officials said many offenders rent out entire floors.
