Avoiding the coronavirus is giving the Cuomo clan cabin fever.
Michaela Kennedy-Cuomo has been clamoring to attend a college graduation party, her dad, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, said Thursday, while bemoaning not seeing his mother since the pandemic hit.
“Michaela’s graduating from college this year,” the governor said in a press briefing, of the youngest of his three daughters, a student at Rhode Island’s Brown University.
“She said, ‘You know a lot of people are having parties, and they’re having graduation-lite events,'” relayed Cuomo — as Michaela sat just feet away at the Syracuse briefing. “‘Should I go?’
“You can’t tell them anything at 22,” continued the governor, who has advocated daily for strict social distancing to beat the bug. “I couldn’t tell them anything at 21, 20, 19. But I said, ‘Here’s the facts. This is what we know, and is it worth the risk to do it?'”
The governor didn’t explicitly reveal the outcome, but said, “Michaela’s made all the right decisions.”
The moral of the story, Cuomo said, was that the speed at which the coronavirus is ultimately defeated is directly tied to how diligently New Yorkers abide by social distancing and other precautions.
“You know who’s going to protect you? You are. You know who’s going to protect Michaela, 22-years-old? Michaela being informed,” said Cuomo. “Every parent, every child, it’s your job to understand and protect yourself, and I just urge caution.”

Andrew Cuomo and his daughter, Michaela Kennedy-Cuomo, appear at Thursday’s coronavirus briefing.Hans Pennink The governor said that playing by those rules has taken its toll on him as well, as he’s had to restrain himself from visiting his mother, family matriarch Matilda, since the outbreak began.
“I have not seen my mother sine this started, except on video devices,” said Cuomo. “I could have. That’s up to me, you know. This is your relationship, it’s your interaction, it’s your family, it’s your friend.
“There’s no law or regulation that tells you how to interact with your personal relationships. That’s up to you. I hope you do it smartly, but that’s up to you.”
While Cuomo has starred in his daily pandemic updates, his extended family has frequently appeared around the periphery.
His kid brother, CNN host Chris Cuomo, battled the coronavirus, followed by both his teen son and his wife, who threw everything but the kitchen sink at the bug.
Chris’ 17-year-old daughter, Bella, has gone a different kind of viral, lighting up social media with her wild TikTok videos.
Through his daily briefings, the governor has also provided everything from unsolicited parenting advice to updates on his dog.
