HS whiz gets to go home
She “musseled” her family into a new home.
Samantha Garvey, the homeless Long Island high-school biology whiz whose research into mollusks made the semifinals of the Intel Science Talent Search, finally has a place to keep her microscope.
The 18-year-old and her parents, brother and sister yesterday moved into a two-story, three-bedroom, rent-subsidized home in Bay Shore.
“This is just completely surreal,” she said, holding the keys to the white house with maroon trim. “I could not be more grateful.”
The Brentwood HS senior’s research into how Long Island Sound mussels react to predators grabbed the attention of Intel judges and catapulted her family’s plight into the national spotlight: A car accident had left her parents unable to work, and the family was evicted from its home on New Year’s Day.
Suffolk County secured housing for the Garveys, who say they can’t wait to reunite with their pit bull, Pulga, and several turtles.
“Amazing,” said Samantha.
