Bagpipes by the hundreds sounded out over Ground Zero on Friday as the NYPD Emerald Society joined with pipe and drum bands from the Port Authority, the New Jersey State Police and other regional groups to commemorate the 17th anniversary of 9/11.
The performance was part of a parade and memorial honoring the first responders who were “Faithful until death,” making the ultimate sacrifice during the tragedy, including 23 NYPD officers, according to Chief of Department Terence Monahan.
“They answered the call — it’s who they were,” Monahan told attendees at the Police Memorial Wall in Battery Park.
“Their legacy will live on and inspire us in all we do.”
