Inmates caused a brief evacuation at the Manhattan Detention Complex, the city jail also known as “The Tombs,” when they set a fire inside on Friday night.

One Department of Corrections officer suffered from smoke inhalation after the inmates started a garbage fire in an old cell on the ninth floor of the prison at around 8:34 p.m., sources told The Post.

Two Corrections buses were filled with inmates evacuated from the city jail in lower Manhattan as the Fire Department worked to place the blaze under control an hour later at 9:45 p.m., according to the Fire Department.

The fire spread to three cells before it was put out, sources said.

The 12-story complex currently holds 648 inmates.
