The 18-year-old woman, Marilyn Cotto Montanez, was near Lake and Morningside Avenues around 6:30 p.m. Thursday when she was shot in the head, authorities said.

First responders transported Montanez to a local area trauma center, but she could not be saved, officials said.

Montanez lived on Morningside Avenue and was a local public-school student, authorities said.

In a press release from Yonkers police, officials said there was some kind of confrontation between two groups on Lake Avenue and that a chase broke out. While running, an armed suspect fired, fatally striking Montanez.

Police Commissioner Charles Gardner said in a statement, “Last night, we experienced a tragic event where a young person lost their life due to gun violence. The Yonkers Police is dedicating every available resource to apprehend the person responsible for this heinous act.”

The suspects fled the scene. Two people were later taken into police custody for questioning but were not immediately charged.
