Several judges are seething over what they charge was an “insulting” call by Mayor Bloomberg’s top legal adviser to make the bench “more accountable.”

Eighteen appellate judges signed a letter condemning City Attorney Michael Cardozo’s Dec. 4 speech, excerpts of which were printed in The New York Law Journal on Dec. 7.

“Judges must be made more accountable,” said Cardozo, proposing such solutions as requiring performance measures.

The letter, published in Thursday’s Law Journal, calls his points “unnecessary to the point of being insulting” and adds that “every one . . . has already been implemented.”

Judges already report on every trial, conference and submitted motion, the letter adds.

Cardozo yesterday said he had not meant to “impugn the overworked and underpaid judiciary.”
