Jail pen attack
A Rikers Island inmate stabbed a captain and an officer with a pen after he was caught trying to smuggle in contraband.
Hector Matos, 40, tried to slip in two pieces of sharpened plastic in a red balloon during a visit with his mother, according to a Department of Correction spokesperson.
When asked to write up a statement on the sneaky incident, Matos stabbed Captain Winston Declet in the head and Correction Officer Edward Martinez in the hand with a Bic pen.
“A total of five uniformed personnel — one captain and four officers — were present during the interview of the inmate,” the Department of Correction said in a statement.
Matos now faces charges of attempted murder and assault in Bronx Supreme Court next week for the attack.
He is already remanded on charges of second-degree murder.
